3DS Authentication 2.0

3DS Authentication, also known as 3D Secure, is an additional security protocol used in online credit and debit card transactions to reduce fraud and increase transaction safety. It ensures that the customer is authorized to use the card being presented, providing an extra layer of verification within the Getnet Web Checkout. Enabling 3DS can help increase transaction approval rates while enhancing security for your customers. To activate 3DS for your checkout, merchants should contact Getnet’s Integration Support Team.

The 3DS protocol involves the cardholder, the issuing bank, the card network, and Getnet’s payment platform in the authentication process. It has two flow types, depending on whether the card issuer decides to challenge the customer:

• Frictionless flow: The customer is not challenged and is considered authenticated without needing to be redirected.
• Challenge flow: The customer must authenticate with the card issuer. During this process, the customer is redirected to a URL provided by the issuer via Getnet Web Checkout. Once authentication is complete, the customer is redirected back to the online store, where Web Checkout finalizes the payment authorization and displays the corresponding success or failure message.

Implementation involves communication between the merchant’s checkout, Getnet’s 3DS services, and the card issuer, with front-end components to display the authentication challenge when necessary. This ensures a secure, compliant payment flow, transferring liability for authenticated transactions to the issuing bank and increasing overall trust in online purchases.
